The Juliana Trail is a 267 km long-distance trail around the Julian Alps. It runs through valleys, overpasses, forests, urban and rural areas, along the Soca and Sava Rivers. The trail runs across the areas around the Julian Alps mountain range. It starts near the Slovenian/Italian border in Kranjska Gora, which is a well-known winter and summer tourist resort, and continues along the Sava River, across the Karavanke mountain range, where it offers beautiful views of the highest peak in Slovenia, Mt Triglav.
You will start your 6 days/ 5 nights hike at lake Bled, one of the Slovenian and European pearls, crossing the Pokljuka plateau in the centre of the Triglav National Park, descent to the picturesque Lake Bohinj where you will explore the stunning Bohinj valley.

Highlights of Juliana trail hiking adventure

Experience Julian Alps on your Juliana trial 6-day hiking adventure.

What we’ll do – day by day plan

On your first day, you will meet in Bled with a welcome meeting where you will get all the last information and materials you will need during your hike. Lake Bled will also be the start of the first stage. Your hike continues through Gorje to the Pokljuka Gorge. You can expect a few steep ascents up to Pokljuka plateau where you will hike over Kranjska Planina pasture and Planina Javornik pasture in the heart of the amazing Pokljuka plateau. Your day will end at Goreljek meadow where you will spend your first night. Our suggestion is to have a typical Alpine dinner in order to experience the Julian Alps to the fullest.

The stage on day 2 runs through the forests and pastures of Pokljuka plateau and descends to two of the highest lying villages in Bohinj valley. The villages Koprivnik and especially Gorjuse are stunning and world-famous for their arts and crafts. You finish descending from the plateau at Jereka village in the Upper Bohinj Valley. From there, the trail continues through Cesnjica, Srednja vas and Studor villages that offer amazing views and a true alpine architecture experience. You will end your hike in Stara Fuzina village; the most populated village (approx. 400 people live in Stara Fuzina) in the entire Triglav National Park area.

For the next 3 days, you will be based in Bohinj valley. This is great because you can choose what hike you do each day. Our suggestion is to visit the Mostnica river gorge and Voje valley. On this beautiful scenic hike, you will have the chance to really experience the power of water and enjoy many interesting rock formations that water created through thousands of years. You will hike all the way to the end of the Voje valley where Mostnica river springs at the Voje waterfall.

On day 4 we invite you to hike above the Bohinj valley to Vogar meadow and visit two of the most spectacular viewpoints on lake Bohinj and the Julian Alps. On the meadow, you will also find a mountain hut, where you can take a break, try some real mountain food and enjoy the mountain life.

On day 5 you will be hiking around the largest permanent lake in Slovenia, Lake Bohinj. Your hike will take you all the way to the end of the valley where the famous Savica waterfall is. We have a few options for how you can hike along the south side of the lake on your way back and we will be happy to share them with you. If you want to shorten this hike you can use the electrical boat from one side of the lake to the other.

A short but a really interesting and picturesque is the last stage of the tour. It starts at Stara Fuzina and very soon you will do a short section of the hike along the east shore of the lake. A must stop is in village Ribcev Laz and visit of the church of St. John the Baptiste and the monument of the 4 brave men, who were all from Bohinj valley and were the first ones who more than 240 years ago climbed the Triglav mountain. You will continue your hike through the lower Bohinj valley on unpaved roads and paths across the panoramic Dobrava meadows to Bohinjska Bistrica, which is the administrative centre of Bohinj.

When to come:

The ideal time for this hike is between April and October. Please note that the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, so in April you can encounter some snow on higher-lying areas.
