On this self-guided hiking tour, we invite you to explore the Bohinj ridge that is located on the south side of the Bohinj valley. In the past, the ridge was a gateway for the locals from Bohinj and they had to cross it if they wanted to leave the valley and sell their cheese and iron. The ridge was also a very important defence line during and after WW1, therefore is full of mule trails and old military buildings that remind us of the past. You will hike in an area where the first Slovenian mountain hut was built and where you can find loads of protected alpine flowers that the Julian Alps are famous for. The hike will also take you over the second-highest mountain pass in Slovenia and you will be hiking on the Juliana trail. We are positive that you will enjoy this 4 days/3 nights hike and we are looking forward to welcoming you to our area.

What we’ll do – day by day plan

Before you start your hiking experience you will have a welcome meeting where you will get all the final information and materials for your hiking tour on the Bohinj ridge. You will start your hike in the largest village in Bohinj, Bohinjska Bistrica and hike to the oldest Slovenian mountain hut. We suggest that you do a break there and enjoy the amazing views on mt. Triglav, before you continue to Crna Prst, where you will spend your fist night.

  • distance: 7 km
  • ascent: 1300 m
  • duration: 5-6 hours

On this day you will cross the Bohinj ridge and descend into the Baca river valley as the Bohinj locals did for many years in the past. The hike will be mostly downhill and you will have the chance to enjoy the hike in a crowd-free and amazing landscape. Once you reach the Podbrdo village your hike for the day is done and you can reward yourself with a beer or a glass of Slovenian wine in the local pub before you check-in at your accommodation.

  • distance: 7 km
  • ascent: 100 m
  • descent: 1300 m
  • duration: 4 hours

On day 3 you will hike on the Juliana trail and you will hike up to Baca saddle where you will be awarded an amazing view of the Baca valley. From the saddle, you will hike on old WW1 mule trails that will bring you all the way to the top of mt. Lajnar. Below you will already see your accommodation for the night as you will descend down to the second-highest pass in Slovenia – Bohinj saddle (1277m).

  • distance: 10 km
  • ascent: 1100 m
  • descent: 350 m
  • duration: 5-6 hours

The last hike of the tour will bring you back to Bohinj valley and Bohinjska Bistrica. Soon after you start your hike you will join the Juliana trail and you will descend down to the valley crossing alpine pastures and Nemski Rovt village. Once you reach Bohinjska Bistrica your hiking tour is done and we hope that the memories of the hike will stay with you for a long time.
