Experience the Vintgar Gorge

Vintgar Gorge is a breathtaking natural wonder located near Gorje, approximately 4 kilometers northwest of Bled in Slovenia. Carved by the Radovna River, this 1.6-kilometer-long gorge is nestled between the Hom and Boršt hills, featuring the river’s waterfalls, pools, and rapids. A wooden walkway that crosses the gorge provides visitors with stunning views of the natural beauty of the area, including the Žumer galleries and the mighty 13-meter-high Šum river waterfall, one of Slovenia’s three river waterfalls. The canyon is the closest entry point to Triglav National Park from Bled.

About Vintgar Gorge

The name Vintgar is said to originate from the German word Weingarten, as the nearby Podhom is known for its vineyards. Another story suggests that the gorge’s shape resembles a wine glass. Other similar gorges in Slovenia have taken on the name Vintgar as well, such as Iški vintgar, Ribniški vintgar in Srednja vas in Bohinj, and Bistriški vintgar near Slovenske Konjice.

Vintgar Gorge was discovered in 1891 by photographer Benedikt Lergetporer and Gorje’s mayor and cartographer Jakob Žumer. It was previously inaccessible, but due to tourist development in Bled, over 500 meters of bridges and galleries were built in 1893, and make the canyon open to the public. The gallery has a name after Žumer, and a plaque commemorating him is visible on a rock wall.
